John Hardman Sterling Silver Chalice & Paten Ref 8435

Sterling Silver Chalice & Paten.
Chalice made in Birmingham, England, in 1862, by the Victorian Silversmith John Hardman & Co, who was well known for his work with Pugin.
Blending Paten made in London in 1924 by the Ecclesiastical Silversmith Blunt & Wray Ltd.
Chalice and Paten are both hallmarked with sterling silver hallmarks and their respective makers' marks.
The cup is finished with a small, decorative calix at the base with Gothic style engraving. It is gilded on the inside.
The hexagonal stem leads to the decorative knop. The knop has six round lozenges set with blue and silver enamels spelling 'JESUS+'.
The petalled base is hexagonal in shape, and is finished with Gothic style engraving. There is a further blue and silver circular enamel with a Gothic cross.
The edge of the base is finished with fine beading.
The blending dish Paten is in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. The Paten is entirely gilded all over and has an engraved Gothic IHS to the centre.
Chalice height 19cm. Base diameter 12cm. Diameter of top of cup 9.5cm. Diameter of Paten 13cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 430g.
