Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 6431
19th century French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt with standing figures.
The Chalice and Paten were made by the French silversmith Andre Favier, who worked in Lyon in the mid 19th century. He was joined in making excellent silver pieces for the Church by his two nephews.
Chalice and Paten are made in solid silver and both pieces are mainly gilded all over, with contrasting silver figures on the Chalice.
Both are hallmarked with the French Minerva silver mark & the silversmith's maker's mark throughout.
The calix is finished with three raised silver figures depicting Faith, Hope and Charity. These figures are in silver, contrasting with the surrounding gilt of the cup.
Between these figures are set three coloured cabochon stones, in each of green, red and violet.
The hexagonal stem is finished with fine engraving work.
The knop is also engraved and it has six lozenges with diamond shaped coloured champleve enamels in Gothic style.
The hexafoil base is finished in an attractive shape.
It is set with three standing figures, depicting The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady & Child and St Peter, each of these figures with finely chased details.
Between the figures are set three coloured cabochon stones matching the same colours as those on the calix: green, red & violet. The base is finished with engraving and decorative work.
The stepped edge of the base is finished with engraving, fine bead work, and a small blue enamelled cross.
The matching well shaped Paten has a finely chased image of the Agnus Dei with a Latin inscription: Agnus Dei Panis Vivus, surrounded with fine beading work.
Chalice height 26.5cm. Base diameter 16.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 10cm. Diameter of Paten 14.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,021g.
