Antique Pontifical Baroque Chapel Set Ref 8448 - comprising Chalice & Paten, Cruets and tray, with additional tray.
19th century French Pontifical Baroque Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, Pair of Cruets with Tray, and an additional tray.
The set was made by the highly renowned French Silversmiths Placide Poussielgue-Rusand of Paris (1824-1889).
All the pieces are made in solid silver, gilded all over, except for the additional tray which is brass gilt. There are the maker's marks and French hallmark of the period. The cruets are part crystal.
The set is finished with baroque style decoration throughout.
The Baroque style Chalice has a calix with three oval roundels depicting Faith, Hope and Charity. Between these are the Eucharistic symbols of grapes, wheat and bulrushes.
The circular stem has a large central knop, worked with grapes, wheat and bulrushes.
The trefoil shaped base has three large images. These depict Christ washing the disciples' feet, The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane and The Crucifixion.
The lower part of the base is finished with baroque style decorations, incorporating bunches of grapes into the design.
The matching well design Paten has a central engraving of the IHS with Cross and Crown of Thorns. It fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 31.5cm; the diameter of the base is 15.5cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 9.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 16.5cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 673g.
The cruets are made in crystal with silver gilt casing work to the base, lid and handle.
The silver casing is gilded all over.
The lid of each cruet has grapes on one cruets and bulrushes on the other. The bases are engraved with grapes and bulrushes.
The crystal parts are fluted.
The tray is gilded all over. It has rich baroque decoration round the shaped edge, incorporating bulrushes along the edges.
The tray measures 29cm x 22cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 14cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 810g.
The overall total weight of the Chalice & Paten, with Cruets and their tray is 1,483g.
There is an additional tray with this set, made in brass gilt, with a decorative pointed edge, finished with rich decoration.
This tray measures 29.5cm x 22.5cm at the maximum points.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case, supplied by Poussielgue-Rusand of Paris, to incorporate the whole set.
