Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 8505 - comprising Chalice & Paten, with Cruets and tray and Sanctus Bell.
19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets (part crystal) with Tray and brass Sanctus Bell.
The set was made by the French Silversmiths Armand-Calliat (1822-1901), one of the finest Ecclesiastical Silversmiths of this period.
All the pieces are made in solid silver, gilded all over. All pieces have the French silver hallmark of the period and the maker's name. The cruets are part crystal, and the Sanctus Bell is brass.
A dedication on the base of the Chalice dates it to 1875.
The set is finished throughout with richly coloured enamels and decorative work.
The Gothic style Chalice has a calix made in six Gothic Arches, finished with engraving. Six circular coloured enamels complete the arches, with designs alternating between colourful Gothic crosses and Angels.
The engraved circular stem leads to the decorative knop, finished with decoration and six red stones to the edges.
The hexafoil petalled base is finished with fine detail. On each petal is a large coloured circular enamel. These depict St Gregory, St Augustine and St Thomas. The remaining three enamels are colourful Gothic style crosses.
The base steps down to the edge with fine engraving to finish.
The matching well design Paten has a central engraving of a stylish Gothic Cross with a central Agnus Dei. It fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 25cm; the diameter of the base is 15cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 9.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 15.5cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 1,029g.
The cruets are made in crystal with silver gilt casing work, base, top, lid and handle.
The silver casing is gilded all over. The lids and the casing work are finished with grapes and bulrushes to differentiate them.
Round the casing work are four circular coloured enamels, alternating between Gothic style crosses and Angels, reflecting the same work as on the Calix of the Chalice.
The bases are finished with fine engraving.
The tray is gilded all over. It is finished with fine engraving work round the edge and to the centre. This is set with eight circular coloured enamels depicting the Four Evangelists with colourful Gothic crosses between. Small red stones to finish.
The tray measures 27cm x 17cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 14cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 980g.
The Sanctus Bell is made in brass and has a decorative shaped handle.
The bell measures 10.5cm in height. The weight of the bell is 126g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 2,135g.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case to incorporate the whole set.
