Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 8770 - comprising Chalice, Paten & Ciborium

Exceptional 19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, and matching Ciborium.
The set was made by the Silversmith Placide Poussielgue-Rusand who worked in Paris (1824-1889). He was probably the most highly renowned French Ecclesiastical Silversmith of 19th century France.
He worked with some of the best designers and architects of the period, such as Violet-le-Duc, and for many significant Churches, Cathedrals and Shrines throughout France and further afield.
This set was made by Poussielgue-Rusand after designs of Fr Arthur Martin(1801-1856) and is known as the 'Consecration of Mgr de Dreux-Breze at Notre Dame de Paris on April 14th 1850'.
A set of this design exists today in the Treasury of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
At the bottom of this page are displayed copies of this set taken from an original catalogue of Poussielgue-Rusand.
All the pieces are made in solid silver, and are gilded all over; each piece bears the French silver hallmark of the period and the maker's mark.

The Chalice and Ciborium are both finished with fine filigree work throughout, numerous deep blue and gold enamels, gargoyles and coloured stones.

The Chalice has a calix made in filigree work, and set with four circular enamels.
These depict The Last Supper, The Crucifixion, The Descent from the Cross, St Thomas with the Risen Christ. Each enamel has its accompanying Latin text.
Between the enamels are four large deep red oval shaped stones.
The circular stem is finished with engraving throughout. Central to this is the decorative knop, which is has four large circular lozenges set with enamels depicting the Four Evangelists.
Between the enamels are further red oval shaped stones and decorative work.
The bottom part of the stem is set with further red stones, engraving, and four large gargoyles, reaching down to the very edge of the base.
The shaped quatrefoil petalled base has further deep blue enamels, each filling a petal with a scene from The Old Testament scriptures.
The edge of the base steps down with fine filigree work edging the step.
The matching well design Paten has a large enamel to the centre of the Crucifixion, finished with fine engraving.
The Paten is gilded all over and fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 26.5cm; the diameter of the base is 16.5cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 11.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 16.5cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 1,448g.

The design of the Ciborium echoes that of the Chalice, with fine filigree work, coloured red stones and enamels.
The circular lid on top of the Ciborium is finished with fine engraving to the edge. the centre-piece has four semi-circular enamels, each depicting a Prophet: Isiah, Jeremiah, Daniel and Ezekiel.
Between the enamels are red stones. In the centre of the lid, the cross is in Gothic style and finished with decorative work.
The bowl of the Ciborium matches that of the Chalice, with four enamels, filigree work and large red oval stones.
The circular stem is finished with rich, raised decoration, and the central knop has the identical finish and enamels to that of the Chalice.
The base of the Ciborium also matches the Chalice, with gargoyles, enamels of Old Testament Scenes, stones and filigree work.
The overall height of the Ciborium to the top of the cross is 34cm; the diameter of the base is 16.5cm; the diameter of the top of the bowl is 13.5cm; the depth of the bowl is 6cm.
The overall weight of the Ciborium is 1,607g.
The total combined weight of all three pieces in the set is 3,055g.
The set is presented in a lined fitted carrying case.
