Antique Baroque Chapel Set Ref 8821 - comprising Chalice & Paten, Sanctus Bell, Cruets and tray.
19th century French Baroque Chapel Set in solid silver. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets with Tray and Sanctus Bell.
The Chalice, Paten & Sanctus Bell were made by the French Silversmiths Martin and Dejean, who worked in France from 1837-1846. The Cruets and Tray were made by the French Silversmith who worked around the same time, Alexis Renaud (1831-1847).
All the pieces are made in solid silver. All have their respective maker's marks and French hallmark of the period.
The Baroque style Chalice is made in solid silver, with the cup gilded.
The calix to the Chalice has three oval roundels depicting Faith, Hope and Charity. Surrounding these are grapes, sheaves of wheat and bulrushes.
The decorative circular stem leads to the knop. The knop has three pairs of raised Cherub heads, with decoration around.
The circular base has three square images to the top. These depict Christ the Good Shepherd, The Assumption of Our Lady and St Joseph. There are bunches of grapes worked between.
The edge of the base is finished with three raised pairs of Cherub heads, with decorative work between.
The matching well design Paten has an engraved IHS design with cross, crown of thorns, and heart. It fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 33cm; the diameter of the base is 17cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 9.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 16.5cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 862g.
The cruets and tray are made completely in solid silver.
The cruets are finished with rich baroque style decoration throughout.
The wine cruet has grapes of the vine worked in panels to the body, and a bunch of grapes to the lid.
The water cruet has bulrushes worked in panels to the body and to the lid.
The tray has large bunches of grapes worked in ovals round the edge, with bulrushes between. Fine beading finishes the outer edge of the tray.
The tray measures 29.5cm x 18cm x 6cm high at the maximum points. The cruets measure 17.5cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 672g.
The matching Sanctus Bell is also made in solid silver. It has decorative work all round.
The bell measures 10.5cm in height. The weight of the bell is 130g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 1,664g.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case to incorporate the whole set. The case has brass finishings to the corners and decoration to the leather top.
