Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 7522 - comprising Chalice & Paten, Cruets, and Sanctus Bell
19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets with Tray, Sanctus Bell.
The set was made by the French Silversmiths Demarquet Freres, who worked in Paris in the later part of the 19th century.
All the pieces are made in solid silver, gilded all over, and hallmarked throughout (the cruets are part crystal). They all bear the maker's name and the French silver hallmark of the period.
All the pieces have a mixture of matt and shiny gilt finish to provide a contrast, with the main pieces finished with Limoges Enamels.
The Gothic style Chalice has a calix finished to the edges with fine filigree and beading work, and a matt gilt finish.
The round stem leads to the knop, below which are four oval shaped coloured stones.
The circular base is set with four round Limoges enamels, depicting the four Evangelists. Between these is a cross set with stones.
The matching well design Paten has a fine Limoges enamel of the Victorious Lamb at the centre, surrounded with Latin inscription 'Agnus Dei Panis Vivus'
The height of the Chalice is 22.5cm; the diameter of the base is 15cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 10.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 14.5cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 833g.
The cruets are made in crystal with silver gilt casing work, base, top, lid and handle.
The crystal is supported with filigree work. The crystal itself is engraved with grapes and bulrushes for the resepective cruets.
The tray is gilded all over, in a partly matt finish. It has the same four round Limoges enamels of the four Evangelists, with decorative work between.
The tray measures 26.5cm x 16.5cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 18cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 806g.
The Sanctus Bell is made in solid silver and is gilded all over in a mainly matt finish. It has decorative themes to match the other pieces. It measures 12cm in height by 5.5cm in diameter at the base. It weighs 131g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 1,770g.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case to incorporate the whole set.
