Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 7962 - comprising Chalice & Paten, Cruets, and Sanctus Bell
Spectacular antique French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets with Tray, Sanctus Bell.
The set was made by Antoine Jolivet, a French Silversmith who worked in Paris in the second half of the 19th century.
All pieces in the set (except the Sanctus Bell) are made from solid silver, they are hallmarked with the French hallmark of the period and bear the maker's mark.
The set is gilded throughout, and there are an abundance of enamels, stones and filigree work.
The Gothic style Chalice has a calix worked in fine filigree work. This is set with three round enamels depicting three of the Apostles, each of which is set on a larger quatrefoil shaped enamel worked in colours.
The hexagonal stem is set with fine filigree work, and the central knop has six square shaped coloured stones.
The hexafoil pointed petalled base has more fine filigree work to the stem. Each petal has a circular enamel set on a larger quatrefoil coloured enamel. The enamels depict a further six Apostles.
Between each petal is a different coloured stone. The edge of the base steps down with decorative work.
The matching well design Paten has filigree work round the centre with a particularly fine coloured enamel of The Supper at Emmaus in the middle.
The height of the Chalice is 26.5cm; the diameter of the base is 16cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 10.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 15.5cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 1,006g.
The cruets and tray are finished in the same style. All three pieces are made in solid silver gilt throughout.
The two cruets are finished with an abundance of fine filigree work all over.
The main body of each cruet has six round coloured enamels, each depicting an apostle, making the twelve apostles in total.
Each cruet has a decorative pointed hexafoil base. A coloured stone on each lid differentiates between the water and wine cruet.
The petalled shaped tray continues the same themes with fine filigree work and fluted edges.
Four round coloured enamels depict the Four Evangelists, interspersed with cut amethysts and garnets.
The tray measures 37cm x 15.5cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 16cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 924g.
The Sanctus Bell is made in brass, and is gilded all over. It has fine engraving work to finish.
The bell measures 9cm in height by 5.5cm in diameter at the base. It weighs 76g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 2,006g.
The set comes complete with the original wooden lined, fitted case to incorporate the whole set. The case is of high quality workmanship, very well made, and comes with lockable key and brass fixings.
