Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 7985 - comprising Monstrance with Lunette, Chalice & Paten, Cruets, and Sanctus Bell
Magnificent antique French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets with Tray, Sanctus Bell and Monstrance with Lunette.
The set was made by Jean-Alexandre Chertier, a highly respected French Silversmith who worked in Paris from 1857 onwards.
All pieces in the set (except the Sanctus Bell) are made from solid silver, with crystal parts to the cruets. All pieces are hallmarked with the French hallmark of the period and bear the maker's mark.
The set is gilded throughout, and there are an abundance of enamels, coloured stones and filigree work.
The Monstrance is made in solid silver gilt throughout, and comes with matching Lunette.
It is a sunburst style Monstrance, with decorative rays surrounding the central Gloria.
The large cross at the top has shaped points and is finished with 5 clear stones.
The facia overlays the sunburst rays, and is worked with blue/white gold enamel in a Gothic style, surrounding filigree work with stones set in.
Round the central Gloria is a blue/gold enamel with the words 'Ecce Panis Angelorum Factus Cibus Viatorum +'
The reverse side of the Gloria is finished with a decorative facia.
The hexagonal stem is finished with engraving work throughout, with a design repeated on the Chalice.
The large six sided central knop is finished with six coloured enamels depicting six of the Apostles.
The top part of the hexagonal base is engraved, and is set with six round coloured enamels, depicting the further six Apostles.
The base is hexafoil petalled, each petal finished with semi-circular filigree work and a coloured stones. The whole is edged with fine beading.
The Monstrance steps down with further decoration to the edge of the base.
The Monstrance comes complete with the original solid silver Lunette, fully enclosed with glass on both sides.
The height is 79cm. The width across the sunburst top is 41cm & the base is 26cm across the maximum points. The internal diameter of the Lunette is 7.5cm. The weight of the Monstrance is 3,295g.
The Monstrance comes with a wooden storage case.
The Gothic style Chalice has a calix finished with circles of fine filigree work. Each circle is set with five coloured stones, with further stones between.
Round the top of the Calix is blue/gold enamel with the text 'Hic est enim sanguis meus novi testamenti'.
The hexagonal stem is finished with engraving of foliage design. The hexagonal knop is set with six diamond shaped coloured stones on lozenges.
The top part of the hexagonal base is engraved, and is set with six round coloured enamels, depicting The Crucifixion, Our Lady & Child, St Joseph, St John, St Julien, and a further Saint.
The base is hexafoil petalled, each petal finished with semi-circular filigree work and a coloured stones. The whole is edged with fine beading.
The matching well design Paten has a large blue & gold enamel to the centre, depicting the Victorious Lamb.
The height of the Chalice is 24cm; the diameter of the base is 16cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 10cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 16cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 956g.
The cruets are made in engraved crystal, with silver gilt bases, handles & lids. The tray is solid silver gilt.
The two cruets are finished with fine decorative work and engraving, with clear or red stones on each respective cruet for differentiation.
The neck of each cruet is finely engraved with a decorative pattern.
The petalled shaped tray has fine engraving round the sides, with fine beading to the edge.
The tray measures 26cm x 13.5cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 16cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 729g.
The Sanctus Bell is made in brass and is gilded all over. It has fine engraving work to finish.
The bell measures 1cm in height by 4.5cm in diameter at the base. It weighs 96g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 2,006g.
The set comes complete with the original maker's wooden lined, fitted case to incorporate the whole set of Chalice with Paten, Cruets with tray and Sanctus Bell. The case comes with lockable key and brass handle.
