Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 7939

Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice and Paten both made by the silversmith Jean-Alexandre Chertier, who worked in Paris in the second half of the 19th century.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout, with contrasting silver roundels.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both pieces bear the maker's mark.
The cups has fine engraving of Eucharistic themes including of wheat and grapes. There are six small silver roundels depicting six of the Apostles.
The circular stem is finished with decorative engraving.
The decorative quatrefoil knop has four further round silver plaques, these represent the Four Evangelists.
The hexafoil pointed petalled base is covered with engraving. On each petal is a further silver roundel, illustrating six of the apostles.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt. It has a finely engraved decorative centre-piece, with a silver roundel of Christ in the centre.
Chalice height 24cm. Base diameter 15.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 9.5cm. Diameter of Paten 16cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 711g.
