Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8179

Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice made in France in the early 20th century by Demarquet Freres who worked in Paris.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark and the Chalice bears the Demarquet maker's mark.
The cup has an engraving round the centre of the text 'hic est enim calix sanuiginis mei'.
The calix is made in filigree work, and is set with three coloured oval shaped enamels depicting Faith, Hope and Charity.
The hexagonal stem is finished with fine engraving. The hexafoil knop is set with six blue and gold enamels with the letters 'JESUS+'.
The top part of the base has fine filigree work and a blue enamelled cross.
The decorative hexafoil petalled base has six further coloured enamels worked on blue. These depict The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady and the Four Evangelists.
Between each petal is a raised winged gargoyle.
The base steps down to the bottom with decorative work and beading.
There is a dedication engraving on the underside dated 1915.
The blending well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt. It pre-dates the Chalice and is a very early piece of this style. It fits the Chalice very well.
The Paten is finished with engraving of 'Panis vivus agnus dei' and a circular enamel of the Agnus Dei worked on blue to the centre, and it works extremely well with the Chalice.
Chalice height 25.5cm. Base diameter 17cm. Diameter of top of cup 10.5cm. Diameter of Paten 14.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 947g.
