Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8314
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice made in France by the French Silversmith Antoine Jolivet who worked in Paris from 1857 onwards.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the their maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is made in fine filigree work. It has three large circular enamels, depicting the Holy Family, with small coloured stones set between.
The hexagonal stem is finished with engraving. The central knop has six round lozenges, each finished with a colourful Gothic style enamel. Small filigree work completes the design.
The hexafoil petalled pointed base is set with an enamel to each petal. Three large quatrefoil enamels depict The Nativity, The Baptism of Christ and The Crucifixion.
Three further enamels are of diamond shape with coloured Gothic style decoration. Each petal is finished with fine filigree work, and coloured red stones are set between.
The edge of the base is finished with fine beading, and steps down the bottom.
The blending well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt. It was made by H Berger-Nesme, a contemporary silversmith of Antoine Jolivet, who worked in Lyon from 1856 onwards.
The Paten has an engraved Gothic IHS design to the base, surrounded with fine beading. It fits the Chalice well.
Chalice height 25.5cm. Base diameter 15.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 9.5cm. Diameter of Paten 15cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 663g.
