Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8707
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice made in France by the French Silversmiths Bias Aine & Cie, Paris, 1838-1873.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have their maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is made in fine filigree work set with amethysts round the top. There are three quatrefoil shaped coloured enamels, depicting Faith, Hope and Charity.
The circular stem has a central hexafoil knop finished with engraving and set with six small stones.
The shaped hexafoil petalled base has fine filigree work on each petal. Three panels have three further quatrefoil shaped coloured enamels, depicting The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady and St Joseph. Between these are set further amethysts.
The edge of the base steps down with fine engraving work, and further small stones to the bottom edge.
The blending well shaped Paten was made by Chevron, who worked in Paris during the same period. It is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has an engraved design of a Gothic style IHS to the centre.
Chalice height 27.5cm. Base diameter 17.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 10cm. Diameter of Paten 15.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 799g.
Complete with brand new lined case for carrying and storage.
