Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8762
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Both the Chalice and the Paten are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have a maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is made in filigree work set with three circular coloured enamels depicting the Three Sacred Virtue of Faith, Hope and Charity.
The hexagonal stem is finished with small engraved crosses.
The large circular knop has six sides, each with a colourful circular enamelled Gothic style cross.
The lower part of the base is engraved and steps through 3 tiers divided with beading.
The hexafoil petalled base has rich decoration incorporating grapes of the vine with a large cross to one petal. Three petals have large circular coloured enamels, connecting The Sacrifice of Abraham & Isaac with the Sacrifice of the Mass.
The edge of the Chalice steps down with tracery work between the steps. The outer edge is finished with beading.
The blending well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has large very fine enamel of Jesus the Good Shepherd worked in colour, surrounded with colourful decorative work.
Chalice height 27.5cm. Base diameter 17cm. Diameter of top of cup 10.5cm. Diameter of Paten 16.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,043g.
Complete with brand new case for carrying and storage.
