Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8796
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France by the French Silversmiths Berger-Nesme who worked in Lyon from 1889-1924.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is made in fine filigree work set with six small red stones round the top.
The columnar stem has a central knop, finished with engraving.
Round the centre of the knop is a blue/gold enamel with the words 'Ego sum vitis vos palmites', with coloured stones set around.
The hexafoil petalled base has fine filigree work on three petals, each one set with a small red stone to the centre. The other three panels have three large coloured oval enamels, depicting Our Lord, Our Lady and St Joseph.
The edge of the Chalice steps down with tracery work between the steps.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has a finely engraved design of the Agnus Dei to the centre.
Chalice height 26cm. Base diameter 15.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 9.5cm. Diameter of Paten 15cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 783g.
