French Antique Gothic Ciborium Ref 8306

Magnificent ornate French Gothic 19th Century Ciborium made in solid silver gilt.
Ciborium made in France around 1898 by the highly renowned French Silversmith Armand-Calliat (1822-1901).
This Ciborium is made from solid silver and is gilded all over. It bears the French silver hallmark of the period, and the maker's name.
A dedication inscription on the base dates the Ciborium from around 1898.
The ciborium is finished throughout with finely detailed coloured enamels, filigree work and engraving.
The lid is edged with small heart shaped enamels all round, in white and blue with very fine beading to the edge of each one.
The top part of the lid has fine engraving work round, with a central frieze if coloured neamls and beading work with sheaves of wheat between.
The top of the lid is surmounted with a cross richly finished with fine coloured enamel work.
The bowl has a frieze of coloured enaemls worked round the top, with fine engraving below. The small Calix to the base of the bowl has more fine enamels.
The hexagonal stem is finished with engraving work.
The hexafoil knop is set with six coloured circular enamels of fine Gothic style crosses.
Towards the lower part of the stem is a coloured enamelled crown worked all round.
The ends of the stem are engraved with designs incorporating Wheat, The Chalice of Salvation, Water Jug and Crook, Pax, Alpha and Omega.
The hexafoil petalled base has finely worked trefoil enamels to each petal. These symbolise The Paschal Lamb, The Anchor and the Water Jug with Crook.
The edge of the base steps down with more fine enamel work all round the bottom edge.
Overall Height to top of cross 29cm. Diameter of base 16cm; diameter of bowl 11.5cm; internal depth of bowl 6cm. Overall weight 1,309g.
Complete with original lined, fitted case, with the Armand-Calliat name inside, for carrying and storage.
