Antique French Romanesque Chalice Ref 8809

Antique French Romanesque Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France by the French Silversmith Paul Brunet, a silversmith of high quality, who worked in Paris in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The lower part of the cup has a hammer beaten finish, in the centre of which is engraved 'Hic est enim calix sanguinis mei+'.
Between the text are set raised images of each of the Four Evangelists.
The circular stem has a large central knop, with a design based on the crown of thorns worked throughout.
The circular base has four very fine triangular shaped enamels, depicting scenes from the life of Christ: The Annunciation, The Nativity, The Crucifixion and The Resurrection.
Between these enamels are four raised, winged Angels, their wings reaching up to the base of the stem, which is further finished with Gothic towers.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well.
It has a PAX, Alpha and Omega to the centre, worked on a hammer beaten background.
Chalice height 18.5cm. Base diameter 15.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 13.5cm. Diameter of Paten 15.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,139g.
Complete with brand new lined, fitted carrying case.
