John Hardman Powell Sterling Silver Ciborium Ref 8908
English solid sterling silver gilt Ciborium, made in Birmingham in 1888 by Hardman Powell & Co.
John Hardman worked with Pugin on many of his designs. This is a substantial sized Ciborium made by Hardman Powell.
The Ciborium is completely solid silver and is gilded all over. It is marked with Birmingham sterling silver hallmark and the Hardman Powell maker's mark.
The inside of the bowl and lid are also gilded.
The lid is surmounted with a 4 sided cross mounted on a cylindrical shaped top. The top of the lid has Gothic style engraving work, as does the edge of the lid.
The bowl also has engraving round the top edge. The six pointed petalled calix has fine bunches of grapes, small red garnets and decoration worked all round.
The hexagonal stem is finished with Gothic style engraving. The large decorative knop has further small red garnets set.
The hexafoil petalled base has five large amethysts, and a Gothic cross set with four small red garnets. The base is further finished with decoration incorporating bunches of grapes and vine leaves.
Overall Height to top of cross 34cm. Diameter of base 18.5cm; diameter of top of bowl 12cm; depth of bowl 7.5cm. Overall weight 1,122g.
Complete with brand new lined case for carrying and storage.
