John Hardman Sterling Silver Chalice & Paten Ref 9034
Sterling Silver gilt Gothic style Chalice & Paten in Pugin style.
Chalice & Paten made in Birmingham, England, in 1876, by the Victorian Silversmith John Hardman & Co, who was well known for his work with Pugin.
Chalice and Paten are both hallmarked with sterling silver hallmarks and the John Hardman's maker mark. Both pieces are gilded all over.
The Chalice is elaborately set with gem stones throughout the base & stem. The stones include turquoise, amber, amethyst and pearl amongst others.
The cup is finished with a light engraving to the lower part, with rows of coloured gems where the cup meets the stem.
The circular stem has a large hexafoil knop. This is set with six circles, each finished with different coloured gem stones, with a small turquoise between.
The lower part of the stem has rings of stones towards the base.
The hexafoil petalled base also has many stones, including amethysts, with a crucifix worked to one side.
The matching well Paten is in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. The Paten is entirely gilded all over.
Chalice height 23cm. Base diameter 16cm. Diameter of top of cup 9cm. Diameter of Paten 14.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 826g.
