Antique Chalice by Poussielgue-Rusand Ref 6439

19th century French Gothic Chalice in solid silver gilt by Poussielgue-Rusand.
The Chalice and Paten are made in solid silver, both pieces are gilded all over. Both are hallmarked with silver hallmarks throughout.
This Chalice was made by Placide Poussielgue-Rusand (1824-1899), one of the most highly respected French Ecclesiastical Silversmiths of the 19th century.
Poussielgue-Rusand made many high quality pieces of Church Silver, and this Chalice presents some of his finest work.
The Chalice bears the maker's mark of Placide Poussielgue-Rusand, 'PPR'.
The calix is made in fine hand chaste filigree work. Set on this are four round blue/gold enamels depicting the following scenes with Latin inscriptions:
- The Last Supper, inscribed 'Hoc Est Corpus Meum'
- The Crucifixion, inscribed 'Pro Vobis Effundetor'
- Christ is laid in the sepulchre
- The doubting Thomas inscribed 'Dominus Meus et Deus Meus'
The cup is further finished with four red garnets.
The round stem leads to the decorative knop, which is further finished with four round blue/gold enamels of the Four Evangelists, inset with four red garnets.

The decorative stem leads down to the quatrefoil shaped base. There are four raised gargoyles leading down the stem to the base, finishing with raised heads on the very bottom of the base.
Between the gargoyles are sets of red garnets in various sizes.
The base itself is finished with semi-circular shaped blue/gold enamels, depicting various scenes from the Old Testament.
The edge of the base is finished with further fine filigree work with steps down to the very edge.
The blending Paten is made in sterling silver, gilded all over, and it fits the Chalice very well. It is fully hallmarked sterling silver (London, 1941, made by F Osborne & Co Ltd).
The Paten has an attractive engraving of the Pelican in her Piety, set within a cross.
Chalice height 26.5cm. Base diameter 16.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 11cm. Diameter of Paten 17.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,508g.
Complete with brand new fitted and lined carrying case. Please ask if you would like any further details or information about this piece.
