Antique solid silver Sunburst Monstrance Ref 8319
Solid silver gilt 19th century French sunburst Monstrance, complete with solid silver Lunette, solid silver Pyx and original fitted carrying case.
Made by the highly renowned French Silversmith, Placide Poussielgue-Rusand (1824-1889).
The Monstrance & Lunette are hallmarked throughout with the French 19th century silver mark. Both are made in solid silver and gilded throughout.
This richly decorated Monstrance is finished with fine enamels, standing figures, filigree work and stones.
The central part of the Monstrance is richly enamelled, with each of the four central circles finished with a raised figure of an Evangelist, all four in total.
Between these large circles are small pieces of very fine filigree work, set with small coloured stones. From here, spread our four sets of rays, each finished with bunches of grapes.
The central Gloria is surrounded with finely detailed enamel, interspersed with filigree work and coloured stones.
On the reverse side of the top are raised winged Cherub heads surrounding the centre.
The top of the Monstrance is surmounted with a cross, set with a central red stone to each side.
The circular stem has a figure of Our Lady under a canopy, above which are two figures of St Peter and St Paul.
The large central knop below is finished decorative Gothic style engraving.
Around the quatrefoil petalled base are four large raised winged Angels, kneeling in prayer. The base is further richly decorated.
The Monstrance stands on four feet, formed by winged gargoyles.
The Monstrance comes complete with solid silver Lunette, enclosed with glass.
The Pyx with the Monstrance is in solid sterling silver, and holds the Lunette well. The inside of the Pyx is gilded, and the door has a Gothic style cross engraved.
The Monstrance height is 80cm. The width across the top is 40cm & the base is 27cm across the maximum points. The internal diameter of the Lunette is 6.2cm. The weight of the Monstrance is 3,614g.
The Pyx is 15cm high with a base diameter of 11.5cm. The weight of the Pyx alone is 484g.
The Monstrance has its original lined, fitted case.
This Monstrance is in excellent condition throughout. Please ask if you would like any further details or information about this piece.
