Antique solid silver Sunburst Monstrance Ref 9086
Solid silver gilt 19th century French sunburst Monstrance, complete with solid silver Lunette and original carrying case.
Made by the French Silversmiths Demarquet Freres for P Polti & Cie of Tours, France.
Demarquet were a family of silversmiths who worked in Paris in the second half of the 19th century.
P Polti & Cie were a religious supplier & silversmith from Tours in the same period.
In addition to the maker's mark, the Monstrance and the Lunette are hallmarked with the French 19th century silver mark.
This is a richly decorated sunburst style Monstrance, finished with numerous enamels, large statues and fine filigree work.
The sunburst is surmounted with a facia made in fine filigree work. Circular enamels depict eight of the twelve apostles.
Around the central gloria, is a circle of diamante stones and a deep blue enamel ring with the text 'Ecce Panis Angelorum Factus Cibus Viatorum' worked in gold.
The sunburst is surmounted with a large decorative cross, entirely worked in colourful enamel designs, with a diamante cross in the centre.
The reverse side of the sunburst is finished with a panel in foliage designs, set with fine filigree roundels.
The hexagonal stem is finished with fine filigree work throughout.
The large central knop has six more circular coloured enamels. These depict the remaining four apostles, alongside Our Lord and Our Lady. Filigree work and engraving is set between.
The pointed hexafoil shaped base is richly decorated throughout. There is fine filigree work and engraving between all the main features.
On three petals are large standing statues depicting Faith, Hope and Charity.
On the remaining three petals are three teardrop shaped coloured enamels. These depict St Martin de Tours, St Anthony of Padua, and Our Lady.
The edge of the base steps down with fine beading and further decoration.
The Monstrance stands on three large gargoyle feet.
The Monstrance comes complete with solid silver Lunette, enclosed with glass.
The Monstrance height is 78cm. The width across the sunburst top is 38cm & the base is 26cm across the maximum points. The internal diameter of the Lunette is 7.5cm. The weight of the Monstrance is 3,250g.
The Monstrance has its original lined, storage case, as supplied by P Polti of Tours.
